5.30, 24/7, 365, 9; to the majority of us, these are just mere numbers. To Subahsini Sritharan these figures are a testament to her commitment. Subahsini shares, “When a student calls me at 5.30 am, I don’t turn them away. To me, it is a small sacrifice worth making.” She goes on to explain that she is available to be reached every day, as it has been the case for the last nine years. Does she wish she was doing something else, her answer is a vivacious but firm “No!”.
As an Assistant Student Service Manager at Dika College, Subahsini Sritharan implements and runs the student activities at the college. In addition, Subahsini who is also a registered and licensed Counsellor organises counselling programmes for students such as team building and motivational camps. “The adolescent and young adulthood phase can be one of the most trying times in a person’s life. My door is always open to those who need a listening ear.”
Subahsini is also the student committee advisor, providing advice and a helping hand whenever the committee is in need. As a lecturer, she teaches the Family & Community and Community Service for the Diploma in Early Childhood Education course. In addition, she is a trainer for Career Advantage, a six-month programme that prepares students for employment.
Perhaps a portfolio that she is fondest of is in being a project coordinator for Dika’s initiative with the Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) a non-profit organisation that helps women from marginalised backgrounds to become early childhood education (ECE), educators. “I am the first contact for the students when they arrive in Kuala Lumpur. Some of them come with just the clothes on their backs and a few belongings,” shared Subahsini who added that for many of the lasses, it is their first time stepping out of their villages.
“As a team, we help them to settle in and work with them on their job placements.” Subahsini expressed that she feels an immense sense of gratitude when they successfully complete their diplomas. “Dika has recently collaborated on another similar collaboration and we are all looking forward to helping many more young people find and live their potential.”
It is hard to tell Subahsini apart when she is with the students. Always in her element, her bubbly and effervescent demeanor makes her easy to warm up to. However, when it comes to working Subahsini says that it’s always about striking a balance. “In executing my work, I have to have to be strict, stern and gentle at the same time.” And speaking about balance, she emphasised, “It is essential that we all live a balanced life. Work must not overshadow our responsibilities at home and similarly the other way around.”
Established in 2003, Dika College is a pioneer in early childhood education and special education. It also offers a competitive business management course and the industry-linked Eduprenuer programme. For more information, call +603-80756223 or visit www.dika.edu.my.
