Hi everyone! My name is Lim Siau Wey. I’m 19 years old and I am from Seri Kembangan, Selangor Darul Ehsan. I am currently studying my Diploma in Special Education (Early Years) at Dika College.
I chose this line of study because I want to help children who have special needs. I want to give them the attention they require, help them gain knowledge and nurture them to be contributing members of our community.
Dika College is one of the few institutions which offer the Diploma in Special Education. I appreciate the study environment which is close-knit and family-like where relationships are easily built. In my opinion, this makes Dika different from other institutions.
The lecturers at Dika are very encouraging. Through their personal and professional sharing, they motivate students to do better. The staffs are very caring and they go out of their way to care for our needs. As for my classmates, they are good company.
I enjoy the practical aspects in the assignments and activities assigned to us by the lecturers. It is very different from school where everything is structured and there is little opportunity for opinions and creativity. I personally like the hands-on sessions because it attaches relevance to book-learning.
The flexible time table at Dika allows students to work and so I have begun to work at a kindergarten. The working experience allows me to apply my classroom knowledge. Best of all, I get to address my doubts with my lecturers when I attend classes in the evenings and during weekends.
I love to sing and listen to music, particularly the Rhythm and Blues genre. I also do some drawing and currently I am learning sign language. With this added skill, I hope I would be able to reach out to as many children who require special attention.
In five years’ time, I see myself using the creative benefits of music to work with children who have special needs. I am also keen to pursue credentials in therapy that would help my work as a special educator.
