Loke Chun Man, 27, Dika Scholarship recipient, is an Aries whose passion in life is only outmatched by her cheerful disposition and persistent determination. “I sat for my SPM at the age of 26!”, enthused the youngest of three siblings who hails from Kajang Selangor. “Then again, it is never too late to try and succeed at anything,” she jests.

“After my Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR), I left for Taiwan to study electronics at the Taiwan Vocational High School. After a year and a half there, I knew it was not something I enjoyed. I made the difficult decision to terminate my studies and return to Malaysia,” said Loke.

“I was required to join the National Service (PLKN), after which I attended a few short courses and worked in customer care at a few companies,” said Loke who expressed that nothing really stuck because she felt something was amiss.

“I then decided to go back to studying to get a formal qualification, but before I could do that, I had to obtain my Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) qualification,” said Loke. In 2018, she registered as a private candidate and when she received her results in March this year, she had aced seven straight As.

“I now had a passport to study but I was still undecided, until my niece was born,” shared Loke who expressed that the birth of her niece evoked a passion she had nursed since she was a young child. “I have always loved children, and I realised that early childhood education (ECE), is an area that I would be keen to pursue,” said Loke who was then guided to Dika by a friend already studying ECE at the college.

“Her recommendation was very strong. She felt Dika would be a good choice because of the hands-on approach practiced by the institution which had already been a specialist in the field of ECE since 2003. Now that I have begun my Diploma in Early Childhood Education, I certainly concur with her,” said Loke who signed up for the March intake this year.

“We are always encouraged to share our views and opinions in class, and this is very different from the approaches I have undergone which are just tied down to reading what’s in the textbooks and notes,” said Loke who shared that this has motivated her to enhance her her language and presentation skills.

“I want to be an educator who is knowledgeable and professional in the future. I hope to be able to run my own child enrichment centre one day. For now, I want to learn as much as I can and enjoy myself in the process,” said Loke.

“Guided by our mission to always inspire aspirations, Dika is committed to enriching our students with the wisdom that will cultivate and nurture progressive academic aptitudes and character attitudes,” said Pua Chee Ling, Chief Executive of Dika College. “Our programmes are built on a foundation of industry-based-learning and research, and our students are assured that they will receive a qualification that embodies national and international industry benchmarks,” added Pua.
